Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda…Maternity Photos
When I look back at events, there aren’t many times that I like to have a “do-over.” I’ve been blessed with a wonderful husband and beautiful daughter, good health, a career that I love and a long list of other things for which I’m grateful.
But if I could jump back in time and change one little thing, I’d have a professional photographer take some photos of me during the last weeks of my pregnancy. The stretch marks simply aren’t the keepsake I would prefer. LOL.
In my defense, maternity photography was not much of a “thing” when I was pregnant with Elizabeth. I’m not sure why, but it just wasn’t as common as it is today. And while I know that my husband took a few shots with a “point and click,” they were hardly something I treasured –note the past tense. I was looking for them today and couldn’t even find them (not that I’d show them to you if I did!).
I do get to live vicariously, however, through the maternity photos I take for other moms-to-be.
I love these sessions! They are special with first-time parents and are a ball with families preparing for a second or third child. They capture the anticipation of new life, even in those somewhat (ok, mostly) uncomfortable days.
Here are images from a maternity session I did recently plus a shot I took during the family’s first “Baby’s First Year” session. These images are treasures and as you see, they’re more than suitable for sharing with the world.
I used to like the quote, “I don’t regret the things I’ve done. I regret the things I didn’t do when I had the chance.” And while it rings true for me with respect to my lack of maternity photos, I realize that regret isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.
So now, my quote of choice is, “There are no regrets in life, just lessons.”
Use my experience as your lesson! You will never regret having maternity photos taken (or giving a session as a shower gift to a mom-to-be). You only carry each child once (and once IS enough, am I right?). Capture the time forever.
