Chadwick Canyon: A Natural Senior Portrait Location
I have many, many local backdrops for family portraits, engagement portraits, and outdoor headshots, but a recent senior portrait session took me back to a place I hadn’t been in years: Chadwick Canyon.
Just off of Palos Verdes Drive North, close to Academy Hill, there’s a path labeled Santa Bella Trail. It follows a canyon up a hill and ends at the baseball field on the Chadwick School campus. It is beautiful year round with rustic architecture, dense woods, bright open spaces and all of the colors of the season.
This senior portrait shoot was special not only because of the location and perfect fall weather, but also because Rachael took time to plan ahead. Once we determined the location, she chose outfits that would work well with the setting. She was comfortable in her clothing and so she looks comfortable and at ease in the pictures.
There were so many options that the session was fun and productive. I had forgotten about the old barn and weathered fencing both of which added texture and contrast in a variety of shots.
This canyon is near and dear to Chadwick students as they use it as an outdoor classroom on a regular basis. It’s a beautiful and logical spot for Chadwick seniors to have their portraits taken, but, it’s a wonderful backdrop for all kinds of portraiture. I would love to shoot wedding photos here in the spring and family portraits at any time of the year.
If you live anywhere in the Beach Cities or South Bay, consider having professional portraits taken in Chadwick Canyon (or any of my other beautiful outdoor locations). Capturing a moment in time against an amazing natural backdrop is what On Location Photography is all about.
